What a Sewer Camera Inspection Reveals About Your Pipes

Cracks, root intrusion, bellied pipe, offset joints — a camera shows it all. Here's what the most common sewer camera findings mean for homeowners.

What a Sewer Camera Inspection Reveals About Your Pipes

When we run a sewer camera through your pipe, the footage reveals the full story of your sewer line's condition. For homeowners seeing camera footage for the first time, it can be difficult to interpret what you are looking at. This guide explains the most common sewer camera findings, what they mean for your home, and what action — if any — is recommended.

Tree Root Intrusion

Root intrusion is the most common finding in Duluth sewer inspections, particularly in neighborhoods with mature trees and clay pipe infrastructure. On camera, roots appear as fibrous masses entering the pipe at joint locations. Minor root intrusion shows as thin hair roots; severe intrusion shows dense root masses that fill most of the pipe diameter.

Treatment depends on severity. Minor roots are cleared with hydro jetting. Moderate to severe intrusion is best addressed with hydro jetting followed by CIPP pipe lining to permanently seal the entry points.

Pipe Joint Separation and Offset

Clay and concrete sewer pipes are installed in short sections joined together. Over decades, ground movement, freeze-thaw cycles, and settling can cause these joints to separate or shift. On camera, you can see daylight (soil) through separated joints, or one section of pipe offset from the next.

Minor offset and separation are manageable with monitoring or CIPP lining. Severe offset where sections are misaligned by more than 25% of the pipe diameter may require excavation and realignment.

Bellied Pipe Sections

A belly is a section of pipe that has settled downward, creating a low point where water and waste pool instead of flowing freely. On camera, you can see standing water in the low section even when no water is running in the house. Solids accumulate in bellied sections over time, leading to recurring blockages.

Minor bellies can be managed with periodic cleaning. Severe bellies that cause frequent backups typically require excavation to correct the pipe grade — this is one of the few situations where trenchless lining alone cannot solve the problem.

Cracks, Fractures, and Corrosion

Cracks in clay pipes and corrosion in cast iron pipes are common age-related findings. Hairline cracks in clay pipe are typically not urgent — the pipe can function with minor cracking for years. However, cracks allow water infiltration and eventual root entry, so they should be monitored or addressed with lining.

Cast iron corrosion appears on camera as rough, tuberculated surfaces where the iron has oxidized. Moderate corrosion reduces flow and traps debris. Severe corrosion can thin the pipe wall to the point of failure. CIPP lining effectively addresses both cracking and corrosion by creating a new smooth interior surface.

Grease and Scale Buildup

Heavy grease buildup appears on camera as a thick, light-colored coating narrowing the pipe opening. Scale — mineral deposits from hard water — appears as a crusty, uneven surface layer. Both restrict flow and cause backups.

Grease and scale are effectively removed with hydro jetting. After cleaning, a follow-up camera pass confirms the pipe wall condition underneath the buildup. In many cases, the pipe itself is in good condition once the buildup is removed.
